Casa de Campo Park, Madrid

S/N Casa de Campo, Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid

Description

The Casa de Campo is located to the west of Madrid city center and, with an area of over 1,500ha, it is the city's largest public park by a margin. It was created in the 16th century to serve as a hunting estate for the Royal Palace of Madrid (hence the name which means "Country House") and today it is popular with bikers, runners and for walks; it also has a reputation as a place for illegal prostitution at night time - something to keep in mind for families and lone females. Visitors can spot some wildlife such as deer and rabbits; the landscape and vegetation mainly consist of semi-arid red soil with holm oaks and pine trees. The park contains an amusement park, the Madrid Zoo, and a gondola lift linking it to the Western Park.

Access & Transport

The Principe Pio train station (C1, C7, C10) is a short walking distance from the south-eastern corner of the park and metro line 10 serves its southern side in Lago, Batán and Casa de Campo (line 5 as well). There are also several bus lines that provide convenient access to the park: 3, 25, 31, 33, 36, 39, 41, 46, 62, 65, 75, 138, 148. Finally, the gondola can be used to connect Casa de Campo with Parque del Oeste (Western Park).

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure you wear proper walking shoes and carry some water with you to make the most of your visit. This activity is best combined (geographically) with the Madrid Zoo, Parque de Atracciones de Madrid, the Western Park & Temple of Debod, or the Royal Palace & Gardens of Madrid.

Meta review

Reviews for the park are good without being exceptional. Visitors enjoy it as a good spot for a walk, run, a boat ride on the lake or a picnic. The main draw are the views over the city and the expansive size but there are recurring warnings to avoid some areas known for sexual encounters - families beware.

Environmental & Social

A very green activity that enhances the living environment of residents.

Conclusion

Casa de Campo Park is an excellent option for those looking for a green alternative to Madrid streets and the option to go there by public transport is a definite plus. There are much nicer places to go to in the Comunidad de Madrid so this activity is more for Madrid residents and tourists with longer stays who do not want to go through the hassle of renting a car or arranging an overnight trip - or for the regular runners / mountain bikers.
