La Latina neighbourhood, Madrid

Barrio de La Latina, San Isidro Museum - by Jose Man on Google
Description
La Latina is one of Madrid's oldest neighbourhoods, occupying a large part of the "Madrid de los Asturias" (the city centre in the 16-17th century under the Habsburg dynasty), to the south of Segovia street and to the north of Puerta de Toledo. The layout has retained its medieval feel with squares and narrow streets that follow the former course of creeks. Highlights include the San Andrés church, San Isidro Museum, the Real Basilica of Saint Francis the Great, and the Cebada market.
Access & Transport
The barrio is best accessed by metro with line 5 stopping at La Latina and Puerta de Toledo. Bus is also a good option with stops on Calle de Bailén (western side), Calle de Toledo (eastern side) and Carrera de San Francisco (central).
Instructions & Recommendations
We recommend combining an exploration of the neighbourhood with a visit of the Real Basilica of Saint Francis the Great (reviewed separately), of the San Isidro Museum and a trip to the Cebada or El Rastro markets.
Environmental & Social
Urban environment with hardly any green spaces. The flow of tourism is increasingly having a negative impact on the community with a marked increase in rentals and over-commercialization
Conclusion
The Barrio La Latina is a must-visit area in Madrid, it is easy to cover walking and even though there is no A-list attraction located there, it has a fantastic mix or architectural and cultural attractions, shops and bars/restaurants in a narrow footprint. A good place to discover during the day and go back to in the evening!
