Museo Nacional del Prado

23 Calle de Ruiz de Alarcón, Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid

Description

The Prado Museum (Museo Nacional del Prado) holds one of the best and most extensive collections of European art in the world with paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures spanning the 12th to 20th centuries. The collection is based on the former Spanish Royal Collection and includes numerous masterpieces from Spanish, Italian and Dutch artists such as Goya, Velazquez, Titian, Caravaggio, Rubens and Bosch. El Greco and Dürer are also well represented. It is located in the center of Madrid in a late 18th century building deigned by Juan de Villanueva.

Access & Transport

The closest metro stations are Banco de España (2) and Estación del Arte (1), 600m and 700m away respectively (6-8' walk) Bus is also a practical option with the Museo Del Prado - Jardín Botánico stop (001, 10, 14, 27, 34, 37, 45) right in front of the museum's entrance.

Instructions & Recommendations

Even though the Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums are a short walking distance away from El Prado, we would not recommend visiting more than one of those three per day. This activity is well combined with a visit / walk in the Retiro Park and/or the Palacio de Cibeles & Puerta de Alcalá.

Meta review

As one of the most famous art museums in the world, the Prado is well advertised and reviewed by travel magazines and online bloggers. Visitors' reviews also tell a very positive story with many highlighting the quality of the collections that are "nothing short of exceptional" and the consistency of English language signs/labels. From a practical standpoint, the only recurring negative comment relates to the booking system experience.

Environmental & Social

We could find no information around environmental sustainability beyond the use of LED lighting. Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Prado Museum's fame is not without foundation, it holds by a margin the best collection of Spanish paintings up to the 19th century and the most extensive of Italian paintings outside Italy. The only real drawback, in our opinion, is the over concentration of religious art, which can be explained by the origin of the collection (Spanish Crown) and the fact that it was the main artistic topic in Southern Europe until the 18 / 19th century.

Beautiful building and centrally located

Key negative

Very focused on religious art
