Museo Sorolla, Madrid

37 Paseo del General Martínez Campos, Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid

Description

The Sorolla Museum houses works by the artist Joaquín Sorolla and some of its family members in his original residential house in the Almagro district, in the north of Madrid. Several rooms are still furnished as they were back then, and the paintings are exhibited on the walls. Sorolla was a painter from the late 19th/early 20th century specializing in portraits and landscapes; he was the figurehead of the modern Spanish school of painting. Some of the works of his daughter Elena Sorolla García, a famous sculptor and painter, is also exhibited in the museum.

Access & Transport

The closest metro stations are 400-500m away: Gregorio Marañón (7, 10), Rubén Darío (5) and Iglesia (1). Bus is also an option with the stop "Museo Sorolla" (5, 16, 61) right in front of the entrance. There are 2 parking options nearby: Zurbano, 68 and General Martínez Campos, 42. Note that the museum occupies a listed building with split levels and is not accessible without being able to climb flights of stairs.

Instructions & Recommendations

The museum is walking distance to the Salamanca and Chueca neighbourhoods.

Meta review

Although it is not very famous, and maybe because visitors do not have high expectations, the museum gets excellent feedback. Reviewers point out that it is small but that the house and rooms are quite large, allowing natural lighting in, and complemented by a beautiful garden. Most people also seem to enjoy the artist work, especially some of the portraits and Impressionist works, and find the guide sheet with photos and information on some of the paintings quite handy.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral (no carbon footprint). Positive from a social perspective as the museum helps preserve the artistic heritage of the Sorolla family.

Conclusion

The Sorolla Museum is under the radar compared to some of Madrid's big names and it provides a very different experience - more intimate in many ways where visitors get a feel of the artist's surroundings and can admire many of his work directly on the wall. If you enjoy cultural activities in general or painting in particular, then this is clearly one activity to consider.
