Museo del Aire, Madrid

Autovía del Suroeste, Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid

Description

The Air Museum (Museo del Aire) - full name Museum of Aeronautics and Astronautics - acquires, conserve and displays aircrafts and equipment that are part of the heritage of the Spanish Air Force. It is housed over seven hangars and an outdoor area in the Cuatro Vientos Air Base, the country's first military airfield that is still in use today. The museum contains about 200 aircrafts arranged thematically with the beginnings of aviation in Spain and the Rif War (1921-26) in Hangar 1, fighters in H3, engines and simulators in H2, helicopters and autogyros in H4, and 1:10 scale models in H7.

Meta review

The museum isn't on the usual Madrid travellers' bucket list for the city but gets excellent reviews with the main drawbacks being its location that some visitors find a little hard to find followed by the staff being very particular about not letting people step on the grass. Reviewers state that there are comprehensive collections of jets, helicopters, aero-engines, uniforms and medals. that should satisfy anybody into aviation & military history. It was also noted that the historical narrative around the Spanish Air Force seems to dwindle post 1936's outset of the Civil War.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve a "technical heritage"

Conclusion

Madrid's Air Museum is worth a detour for those with an interest in all things mechanical, planes and helicopters. We would recommend this to anybody based in or around Madrid as well, it is inexpensive and the aircrafts on display are visually impressive.
