BOOK ACTIVITY

Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid

52 Calle de Santa Isabel, Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid

Description

The Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía) is dedicated to art since the 1900's with a strong focus on Spanish artists. It is located along the Paseo del Prado in central Madrid and occupies the building that originally housed the first General Hospital of the city with an extension designed by Jean Nouvel. The museum highlights include many works by Spanish masters such as Pablo Picasso (the original of Guernica is there) and Salvador Dalí. There is also a library with over 100,000 books specializing in art and it holds regular temporary exhibitions, including in its two venues located in the Retiro Park: the Crystal Palace and the Velázquez Palace.

Access & Transport

Estación del Arte (metro line 1) is next to the museum, Lavapiés (3) is 300m away Atocha (1) as well. The Atocha train station also sees most suburban lines transiting through it and several regional and national lines. Finally, buses 6, 59, 85, 27 and 34 stop in front of the museum.

Instructions & Recommendations

Even though the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums are a short walking distance away from the Reina Sofia, we would not recommend visiting more than one of those three per day. This activity is well combined with a walk in the Retiro Park.

Meta review

As expected, positive reviews highlight the excellent collection of Dali, Joan Miró and Picasso paintings but there is a significant percentage of visitors for whom the rest of the art pieces on display is a little underwhelming, a sentiment not helped by difficulty in making sense of the organization and lack of descriptions / background explanation. A recurring tip is to come towards the end of the opening hours to benefit from the free entrance scheme, although the standard rate is deemed reasonable.

Environmental & Social

We could find no information around environmental sustainability - the main use of energy is for electricity consumption (cooling / heating and lighting). Helps spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Sofia Reina Museum has some wonderful modern and contemporary art from a broad range of (mostly) Spanish artists. Unfortunately, it lacks a bit of depth and could do with an improved layout / organization. If you are short in time, that is probably not the venue you will want to earmark as the highest priority, but if you enjoy modern art and have at least 3 days in Madrid, then we would recommend it.
