Salamanca neighbourhood & Golden Mile, Madrid

Calle de José Ortega y Gasset, Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid

Description

Salamanca is one of Madrid's wealthiest and expensive districts; its name comes from the Marquis of Salamanca who was involved in the widening of the city past the old defensive walls in 1860. Highlights include the Paseo de la Castellana (acting as its western perimeter), the Arab House, the National Archaeological Museum and the Plaza de Toros Las Ventas. The capital's high-end shopping area nicknamed the Golden Mile is located there and is generally understood to capture the streets concentrated around Calle de Serrano, Calle Claudio Coello and Calle José Ortega y Gasset.

Access & Transport

The neighbourhood is located directly to the northeast of the historical centre (el Centro) and to the north of Retiro Park. The Serrano (4), Velázquez (4) and Goya metro stations (2, 4) provide a good access to the southern side of the district, Lista (4) to the eastern side, and Nuñez De Balboa (5, 9) to the northern one.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you intend to shop, note that most stores open around 10h30/11h00 and close at 19h00/20h00 This activity is well combined with a visit of the National Archaeological Museum, the Plaza de Toros Las Ventas, or the Palacio de Cibeles & Puerta de Alcalá.

Meta review

The neighbourhood is regularly featured in travel magazines targeting those keen to shop in the city. Most reviewers enjoy the area for its leafy streets and boulevards, safe environment, its wide array of designer shops and high-end hotels and restaurants. There are many visitors for whom it is too sedate and just doesn't really feel like non-stop Madrid anymore.

Environmental & Social

Urban environment with hardly any green space. Socially neutral

Conclusion

The neighbourhood is worth discovering for those who enjoy exploring cities and with an inclination to enter shops. For tourists whose primary objective is to see the main sights and museums, we would only recommend spending some time there if you have at least 3 days in the city - unlike some of Paris and London high-end districts, it is not really a "destination neighbourhood".
