San Miguel Market - by Manuel M on Google
Description
The Market of San Miguel is a covered market built with a cast-iron frame at the beginning of the 20th century on plaza de San Miguel, next to Madrid's Plaza Mayor. There are over 30 vendors selling tapas, cold cuts/hams and other food and drink items. Many of them are affiliated to famous Spanish chefs such as Joan Roca (ice creams) and Rodrigo de la Calle (traditional rices).
Access & Transport
Metro Ópera (2, 5) is 300m away and Sol station (1, 2, 3, C3, C4) just over 400m. The closest parking is Plaza Mayor.
Instructions & Recommendations
We would recommend having lunch or dinner there and combining this activity with a visit of the Plaza Mayor, Catedral de la Almudena, and an exploration of the barrio La Latina.
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity environmentally and socially neutral
Conclusion
The Mercado de San Miguel is very inviting and if you are in the area it is worth a visit; there is plenty of good food and you will have a good time (although it does get crowded) but just be aware that from a price to quality ratio standpoint you will get much better value in other tapas bars in the neighbourhood. It is an excellent option for a group of friends in a mood for different cuisines though as there is so much variety under one roof
Key positive
Visually inviting and some stalls have good quality products
Key negative
Touristy prices - not great value
Suitability
Suitable for all ages and accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
