Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid

8 Paseo del Prado, Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid

Description

The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum is housed in the Palace of Villahermosa on the Paseo del Prado in the center of Madrid. It opened in 1992 after the Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza moved its personal collection there from its villa in Lugano, Switzerland. Because the collection grew over several generations, it covers a wide range of periods and movements including primitive Italian paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries, early Flemish and Dutch painters, Renaissance, North American paintings from the 18-19th centuries and a large number of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artworks from masters such as Gauguin, Cézanne, Renoir or Degas.

Access & Transport

The closest metro stations are Banco de España (2) 400m way and Estación del Arte (1) 600m / 7mins walk. Bus is also a practical option with Banco de España and Neptuno stops (001, 10, 14, 27, 34, 37, 45) both close to the museum's entrance.

Instructions & Recommendations

Even though the Prado and Reina Sofia museums are a short walking distance away from the Thyssen-Bornemisza, we would not recommend visiting more than one of those three per day. This activity is well combined with a visit / walk in the Retiro Park, the Palacio de Cibeles or the Puerta del Sol neighbourhood.

Meta review

The museum gets good reviews overall but there is a significant difference in experience between individuals. Many enjoy the eclectic collection and think the broad range of schools / periods covered partially compensates for the lack of depth and masterpieces whilst other find most of the paintings to be second rate artwork from famous artists and are somehow disappointed with their visit.

Environmental & Social

Some minor actions (e.g. LED lighting) to decrease energy and water intensity. Most of the sustainable focus in on spreading the arts through various social and educational projects. Link to sustainability report: https://www.museothyssen.org/en/transparency-site/sustainability-and-activity-report

Conclusion

The Thyssen-Bornemisza can't be compared to the Prado or even Reina Sofia; it does contain many splendid paintings from an extensive roll call of famous artists but few of them could be called masterpieces. We would therefore recommend this museum for those who have already visited the other main museums in town and/or looking to discover more work by some of their favourite artists.
