El Caminito del Rey

MA-5403, Málaga, Andalucía

Description

El Caminito del Rey (The King's Little Path) is a walkway along the near vertical walls of a narrow gorge in the Andalusian province of Málaga. It is 1m wide and, in places, up to 100m above the riverbed. It was built for the transport of materials during the construction of nearby hydroelectric power plants. The full length of the path is 7.7 km, of which 4.9km are access ways and 2.9km is the walkway itself. The route is only one-way, starting at the Northern access (Ardales) and ending at the Southern access (Álora). There is a shuttle bus service linking both, for a fee.

Access & Transport

The closest village is El Chorro, 60km northwest of Malaga city and 55km northeast of Ronda By car from Málaga, take the A–357 motorway and go towards the MA-5403, through the towns of Cártama, Pizarra, Carratraca, and Ardales The following page provides comprehensive information: https://www.caminitodelrey.info/en/your-visit/how-to-get

Instructions & Recommendations

Children will need to show evidence of their age. Those under 8 years old cannot access the trail. It is recommended to purchase tickets online ahead of time as capacity is strictly limited, for obvious security reasons.

Meta review

Overall online reviews are excellent with visitors stating that although it looks dangerous from a distance, it feels actually quite safe during the walk itself. The only recurring negative comments relate to cancellations (adverse weather conditions, for instance) and inability to get refunds because change of dates doesn't really work for passing travellers. Couple of tips from reviewers: have some change for the shuttle and park at the end (scheduling adequate buffer time) rather than the beginning where it can be challenging to find space.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally green and socially neutral

Conclusion

This is an original hike, a cross between fitness and amusement park ride with some great scenery. It is a little expensive though but, if you are in the area, it is probably worth the detour and time investment.
