Description
Estepona is a popular seaside resort in the province of Málaga, in south-eastern Spain. It has an active fishing port but the key attractions are its beaches (17 across 20km of coastline, 2 of which are rated as 'Blue flag') and the historic centre. The list of highlights include the beaches of Cristo and la Rada (the closest to the centre of town), the 16th century San Luis Castle, Plaza de las Flores, the various flowered streets, the Orchid House, the Municipal Museum, and- the seaside promenade.
Access & Transport
The town is 30km to the southwest of Marbella (A-7 along the coastline or AP-7 inland) and 90km from Málaga. There are direct buses to/from Marbella with a journey time of 1h.
Instructions & Recommendations
If you are just looking to visit, then only half a day is required but it is a good place to stay for a couple of days and enjoy some time at the beach and a quiet (or lively) evening in town.
Environmental & Social
Low carbon footprint. Neutral from a social perspective as tourism provides economic activity to the community but there is a growing case of over-commercialization, and the town is increasingly expensive for residents.
Conclusion
Estepona is a great option for a stop-over on an Andalusia road trip for somebody looking for a seaside break in a small Andalusian town that has retained some of its traditional and attractive aspects. Those are not the best beaches in the region but still very much enjoyable.
