The Nerja Caves

Carretera de Bajada a Playa de Maro, Málaga, Andalucía

Description

The Caves of Nerja are a series of caverns stretching over nearly 5kms. They are split in two sections, one of which (Nerja I) is open to the public and easily accessible via stairs and concrete pathways. Archaeological findings evidenced that the caverns were inhabited from about 25,000BC up until the Bronze Age and some cave paintings have also been identified. One of the halls (the Hall of the Waterfall or Ballet) is used for concerts and festivals.

Access & Transport

There is a large paying parking near the entrance

Instructions & Recommendations

The temperature in the caves is 19ºC so you should bring a sweater. It is forbidden to bring food or drinks and photography is allowed without flash

Meta review

Another activity with many online reviews that are obviously not genuine. Ignoring those, the overall comments are that the caves are gorgeous and safe/not slippery but that they can be overcrowded and are excessively priced. Helpful tips: get there early before the coach tours reach and bring your headphones to listen to the audio-app on your mobile phone.

Environmental & Social

Green activity (except for the lighting). Helps preserve the archaeological and natural heritages of the region and provides economic activity that benefits the local town.

Conclusion

The caves blend cultural aspects and natural features that should be of interest to adults and children alike. At the current fee they are relatively poor value though, unless you have never seen any top-tier cave.
