Plaza de Toros de Ronda visit

15 Calle Virgen de la Paz, Ronda, Andalucía

Description

The Plaza de Toros de Ronda is a bullring managed by the Real Maestranza de Caballería, the oldest and most respected order of horsemanship that was created in 1485 in Ronda, the year the town was "taken back" from the Moors. The bullring, 66m in diameter, was the first entirely constructed from stone and is also unusual in that all seating is covered. There is a museum containing bullfighting related costumes and items as well as weapons used by the Real Maestranza during the Spanish War.

Instructions & Recommendations

Other sights in town include Plaza del Socorro and the three bridges spanning the Guadalevín River of which the most impressive is arguably the Puente Nuevo.

Meta review

Online reviews are mostly consistent in that the majority of visitors neither enjoy nor support the practice of bullfighting but were interested by the cultural and historical aspect of it. In that respect, the feedback about both the structure/arena and the content of the museum are positive. A few negative comments about the audio-guide that doesn't seem to be particularly engaging.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral Socially, a huge negative (bullfighting concept) mixed with a bit of positive (the cultural and artistic aspects)

Conclusion

Those who enjoy or do not mind learning about tauromachy and its cutural aspects will enjoy both the visit of the building and the museum. The ethical aspect can't be ignored of course, and for many it will overshadow the cultural one.

Key positive

Impressive arena and building architecture

Culturally important venue

Key negative

Ethical aspects around bullfighting

Suitability

Not recommended for younger children and those who care about animal rights / cruelty. No info on website but we think the visit is wheelchair accessible.
