Description

Artà is a small town in the northeast of Mallorca that has been settled for about three millennia as some archaeological finds of coins, seals and vessels of the Talaiotic culture can attest. The main attractions are the Pilgrimage church of Sant Salvador that stands on a hill above the town, the 13th century Almudeina (fortress), the Parish church of Transfiguració del Senyor (late Gothic design), the Regional Museum of Artà with is ethnological, natural history and archaeological sections, and the archaeological museum of Ses Paisses.

Access & Transport

The town is 70km northeast of Palma along the Ma-15 via Manacor.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit of the town with the Castell de Capdepera (9km away) and/or the Artà Caves (11km)

Meta review

The star attraction in town, based on online reviews, is the Sanctuary of San Salvador; it is described as a little bland inside but the views from there above the entire island are breath-taking. It is possible to drive up and park but be careful on the way with cyclists. Travel guides also stress the various cultural venues, including for the archaeologically minded such as the Talaiot town of Ses Paísses, less than one kilometre away from the city centre.

Environmental & Social

The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy

Conclusion

Artá is a town with multiple points of interest that deserves a stop for those exploring the northeast of Mallorca. Make sure to take in the views from the Sanctuary of San Salvador.
