Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa - by Management
Description
The Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa (Cartoixa de Valldemossa) was originally built in the 13th century as a palace for King Sancho of Majorca but was bequeathed to Carthusian monks in 1399. It was thus used as a monastery up until the ecclesiastical confiscations of 1835 after which some of the cells were rented out. The most famous lodgers were the composer Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand, with her family in 1838-39. That cell has now been turned into a museum and the admission fee includes a 15mins Chopin recital played several times a day.
Access & Transport
The monastery is in Valldemosa, 18km north of Palma along the Ma-110. Bus 203 goes to the town.
Instructions & Recommendations
The 15mins piano recitals are scheduled at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:15 and 14.15
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity environmentally neutral and socially marginally positive as fees help preserve the region's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
A good cultural activity for those who have already seen the highlights of Mallorca - not great value though, and probably of little interest to children.
