Description
Bellver Castle is a circular shaped fortification located near Palma de Mallorca. It was built in the 14th century in Gothic style and was used as a residence by Kings James II, Sancho and James III of Mallorca. Nowadays, it houses the City Council of Palma and the Museum of History of the city of Palma. The main architectural features are its circular walls, the inner courtyard surrounded by a gallery of Gothic arches, the keep and three towers.
Access & Transport
The castle is about 2.5km west of the centre of Palma. It is possible to walk up from Carrer de Bellver with buses 4, 20 and 46 stopping nearby at ''62-pl. Gomila'. Parking is available onsite.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit there with the Fundació Miró Mallorca
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral except for some electricity consumption (lighting). The castle has been repurposed as well. Preserve the town's historical and architectural heritages
Conclusion
The Castle of Bellver is worth a visit mostly for the view and the photogenic circular design. Probably not worth a long journey but it would be a missed opportunity no to take a look when in Palma.
