Description
The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Mallorca (or Cathedral of Palma, also called 'La Seu') is a Roman Catholic church built across the 13th-16th centuries in Palma de Mallorca. Construction started after the conquest of the island of Mallorca by the Crown of Aragon. It was designed in Gothic style and the edifice is characterized by its volume (121m long, 40m wide and a nave 44m high), its central rose window almost 14m in diameter, the 17th altarpiece of Corpus Christi, the tombs of the sovereign kings of Mallorca (James II and James III), and some modernist ornamentation from Gaudi. The standard admission fee also provides access to the Cathedral's museum.
Access & Transport
The cathedral is in the historical center of Palma, walking distance from most touristic highlights. Buses CC, 25 and 35 all stop within 100-200m. According to our research, wheelchair access is from the exit.
Instructions & Recommendations
The Cathedral also offers guided visits and tickets that include access to the terrace (min. 8 years old). We suggest combining a visit there with the Llotja de Palma and/or the Royal Palace of La Almudaina.
Environmental & Social
The ongoing environmental footprint is low. Helps maintain the town's historic, artistic and architectural heritages
Conclusion
The cathedral is one of Palma's landmarks and those interested in architecture or religious art will enjoy a visit. For the others, the Baroque facade and flying buttresses should still provide a good enough reason to enjoy it from the outside, including from across the small lake.
