Drach Caves, Mallorca

s/n Carretera de les Coves, Porto Cristo, Illes Balears

Description

The Caves of Drach were formed by the action of water sipping through calcareous rocks. The 1,200m route takes visitors through a network of four caves (Black Cave, White Cave, Cave of Luis Salvador, and Cave of the French) and a large underground water lake where a small orchestra performs a short concert.

Access & Transport

The caves are located just south of Porto Cristo, 15km from Manacor and 65km east of Palma Bus 401 goes there from Palma and some regional bus services also stop there (424, 425, 427, 428)

Instructions & Recommendations

During the summer season, tours depart at 10h, 11h, 12h, 14h, 15h, 16h and 17h. During the winter season it is 10h30, 12h, 14h and 15h30. Best to use shoes with some grip (rubber soles) and no heels

Meta review

The caves are typically featured in the list of top attractions in Mallorca by travel guides and online reviews are mostly - but not always - excellent. Interestingly, visitors tend to comment more about the original and enjoyable concert on the lake which is described as either 'magical or a 'nice extra' but there are recurring comments that the tour of the natural formations is actually quite short with nearly half the time taken by the wait for, and performance of, the concert.

Environmental & Social

Low carbon footprint (electricity) We deem this activity socially neutral

Conclusion

The concert is a nice touch but seems to hide the fact that the visit is rather short and therefore a little overpriced. That being said, this is still a very enjoyable attraction to include in an exploration of Mallorca.
