Mercat de l’Olivar, Palma

Plaça de l'Olivar, Palma, Illes Balears

Description

Mercat de l'Olivar is a covered market in the center of Palma de Mallorca with about 80 stands selling fruits, vegetables, meat, fish & seafood, cheeses and cold cuts. There are also some bars and restaurants inside. The market was built in 1951 with a Mediterranean design and comprises two perpendicular halls.

Access & Transport

The market is located in the centre of Palma, 200m north of the Plaza Mayor and 200m south of Plaça d'Espanya. The main station: 'Estació Intermodal' is only 300m away and several bus services stop there and at Plaça d'Espanya. There is parking on site.

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that most stands close early afternoon. We suggest combining the market with a visit of the Plaza Mayor.

Meta review

Online reviews are excellent, but it is tricky to ascertain how genuine they are. The sense though is that the quality of products is good, they are nicely displayed, and it is an excellent option to buy groceries to cook and/or sample regional specialties. There are recurring positive mentions about the fresh fish sold there.

Environmental & Social

No environmental / sourcing data. The small producers' aspect is a positive from a social perspective. Not over-commercialized

Conclusion

One of the best places on the island for those who enjoy shopping for food. Nothing extraordinary from a touristic standpoint but definitely worth checking out for those in the area.

Not overly crowded and reasonably priced
