Plaza Mayor de Palma

Plaça Major, Palma, Illes Balears

Description

The Plaza Mayor de Palma de Mallorca ('Plaça Major' in Catalan) is situated in the centre of town, where the convent of San Felipe Nerri and the seat of the Inquisition were until the area was completely redeveloped from the 1820's up until the 20th century. It is surrounded by three and four-storey buildings including a couple exhibiting a Catalan Modernism design.

Access & Transport

The square essentially marks the center of town. The main station: 'Estació Intermodal' and Plaça d'Espanya are 600m to the north. Buses CC stops on Carrer de Colom and the 3, 4, 7, 20 at Plaça del Mercat. There is an underground parking

Instructions & Recommendations

Go in the evening if you are looking for a lively atmosphere or in the morning if looking for quiet and clean photos.

Meta review

The square is popular for those looking to take pictures of the elegant surrounding buildings with their rows of windows and/or sit down for a drink. It tends to get busy according to many reviewers, in particular when there are traders selling crafts. Not the best place for quality food and competitively priced shopping apparently.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally, there is no data at the neighbourhood level, but it is mostly concrete with few green spaces. Helps preserve the city's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

Worth checking out but not anywhere as impressive as some of the country's most famous Plaza Mayors.
