Sóller town, Mallorca

1 Plaça de sa Constitució, Sóller, Illes Balears

Description

Sóller is a town on the northwest coast of Mallorca. It is linked by an early 20th century train line to Palma. The main points of interest are the tram linking the town to Port de Sóller, the Sala Picasso y Sala Miro containing illuminated ceramics from Picasso and prints from Miro, the church of Sant Bartomeu, and the modernist art museum Can Prunera.

Access & Transport

The town is 25km north of Palma and 5km south of the north-western coastline at Port de Sóller. The train and bus 204 go there from Palma.

Instructions & Recommendations

The Can Prunera seems to have reopened in late 2022 (closed on Mondays)

Meta review

The town is mostly known for the train and tram lines, but visitors are also pleasantly surprised by the 2 exhibitions rooms in the train station showcasing artwork from the two celebrated artists Miro and Picasso - small but it's free so take a few minutes to enjoy. The other attraction is the main square: Plaça de la Constitució with the striking facade of the church of Sant Bartomeu de Sóller. The neo-Gothic and modernist design do not leave indifferent; most like it but not everybody. The interior (cost is 1 euro according to reviews) is nice enough but not as impressive as the exterior.

Environmental & Social

The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy.

Conclusion

An enjoyable town to visit as part of a road trip in the northwest of Mallorca or as a half-day trip by train from Palma. Not worth a long range journey in our opinion though.
