Sausalito town, California

Bridgeway, Sausalito, California

Description

Sausalito is a small town in Marin County facing San Francisco across from the Golden Gate Bridge. From a background in shipbuilding, the community became an enclave for artists and wealthy individuals as well as a tourist destination. Tourists / SF residents come here to enjoy the laidback seaside atmosphere, walk along the boardwalk, check out the houseboats and art galleries, and discover the trails of nearby Marin Headlands.

Access & Transport

Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge on the 101 taking exit 442 from San Francisco or take bus 130. The easiest and most enjoyable way is actually to take a ferry from and to San Francisco (Pier 41 or Ferry Building).

Instructions & Recommendations

For keen walkers it is very much possible to cross the GG Bridge on foot, enjoy the views from the various viewpoints on the Marin side and then walk 3km to Sausalito. Head back to the city by ferry.

Meta review

Often recommended as a half-day excursion by travel guides and bloggers, the town also gets good online reviews. Visitors particularly enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere and the ferry crossing, in other words - the change of scenery. A lot of positive comments about the nice assortment of restaurants, cafes and shops.

Environmental & Social

Green activity except for the transport to get there. Tourism brings activity to the town but also puts pressure on the cost of living

Conclusion

This is a week-end / short break destination for SF residents or a casual half-day trip for travellers with more than 3 days in town and looking to explore the area, away from the busy city.
