Marseille Food Tour (Walking Food Tours)

Quai des Belges, Marseille, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Marseille Food Tour reviewed here is run by Walking Food Tours and takes place around some of Marseille's most popular neighbourhoods including the Vieux Port (Old Harbour), Noailles (next to the Opera and the Canebière), Belsunce, and the Panier. The tour takes three hours during which the guide will take customers to a fish market and several restaurants to try some of the local produces such as Navette (a local biscuit), Panisse (a chickpea pancake), some pasties, cheeses, Poutargue (cured fish roe), fish soup, and some local chocolate. Drinks are also on the menu with some wine tasting, lemonade, mint tea and of course, pastis de Marseille (aniseed liquor).

Access & Transport

This is a walking tour and the meeting place is next to the Vieux Port metro station (M1), under the "Ombrière", the large ceiling-mirror on the quay designed by Norman Foster's design practice. The guide will hold the city flag to be recognizable.

Instructions & Recommendations

Please read the T&C carefully and meet at 11h00 sharp or a little earlier preferably. No need to plan for a lunch after the tour!

Meta review

The tour is well ranked on various portals but gets some inconsistent reviews. Guests enjoy the mix of information about the local food and history as well as the opportunity to discover neighbourhoods from another angle. The concept of consuming the purchased food in a picnic fashion at the guide's house appeals to some but not all customers and the quality of the guides seems uneven. The main source of dissatisfaction is "no shows" by the guide but we cannot ascertain whether those are malicious reviews, whether they did occur, or whether there was a mix up in communication.

Environmental & Social

Socially, this tour supports independent local guides as well as an interaction (physical and economic) with the neighbourhoods' communities. We deem this activity to be environmentally neutral.

Conclusion

The lunch food tour in Marseille offered by Walking Food Tours is a good way to discover several neighbourhoods of the city and get to know more about their history, lifestyle and of course the local food specialties. If your budget can easily absorb the cost, or if you are not entirely comfortable trying out on your own, this group experience is worth considering. For those on a budget or confirmed independent travellers, value is debatable and a matter of personal preferences and interests.

Key positive

An enjoyable way to meet people and discover several neighbourhoods

Good selection of food and some drinks make for a nice picnic lunch

Key negative

Experienced travellers may not really see the advantage, especially if they can speak French

Suitability

Best suited for adults. No information around accessibility so best to contact management directly, especially as some neighbourhoods such as the Panier do have plenty of stairs
