Bear Sanctuary of Müritz

1 Am Bärenwald, Stuer, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Description

The Bear Sanctuary Müritz (Bärenwald Müritz) is home to rescue bears; i.e. bears that were kept in poor conditions in zoos from Germany and some Eastern European countries. It should be noted that after having been in captivity, they cannot be reintroduced to the wild and at the sanctuary they have access to a forest environment where they can roam freely and hunt for their food (hidden there by the keepers/caregivers), a pond and caves. Visitors can observe the bears from the other side of the grid along forested trails and there are playground and activities for children. The work is done in tandem with the international organization "Four Paws", mode details available here: https://www.baerenwald-mueritz.de/en/about-us/about-four-paws

Meta review

This is not a well-known attraction though, because of its purpose, it gets almost exclusively excellent feedback. Visitors comment that there tends to be plenty of "encounters" but because the enclosures are so large with many places to hide you may need to be patient. Online reviews are also very positive about the activities & game options for children and the way educative content is being delivered.

Environmental & Social

The work alongside Four Paws is a reliable stamp that this is a genuine sanctuary, and the educational content is nicely complementary of the mission statement

Conclusion

If only there were more of those! That's what we think of Bear Sanctuary Müritz, a worthwhile mission and excellent execution that can be financed through visitors' entrance fees. If you are in the Muritz Lakes region and love animals, this should be in your itinerary.
