Binzer Strand beach

Description
Binz is a seaside resort located on Rügen Island, just off the coast in North-Eastern Germany. It was developed in the 1870's with lodging houses in villa style and then hotels being built. The sandy beach is nearly 5km long and up to 50m wide and is notable for the design of its rescue stations, its 370m long pier and the promenade alongside it. Part of the charm of the resort is its well-kept historical "Spa architecture" and the nearby natural feature of the Jasmund peninsula chalk cliffs.
Access & Transport
The resort is 16km from Bergen auf Rügen, the main town on the island and 45km from Stralsund, on the mainland. The train from those towns reaches all the way in and 25mins and 50-55mins, respectively. In fact, there are ICE trains from Hamburg (3h45), 315km away.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with other attractions on the island such as Granitz Hunting Lodge and the Jasmund National Park.
Environmental & Social
No carbon footprint linked to this activity. Some economic benefits to the local community but increased commercialization also has its drawbacks
Conclusion
The beach of the seaside resort is an attractive one - though it will fail to attract travellers from warmer climes - but it increasingly suffers from its popularity with rising price and traffic congestion. If you are on a regional road trip, head there as part of a discovery of Rügen Island or out of season.
