Granitz Hunting Lodge

1 Jagdschloß Granitz, Binz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Description

Granitz Hunting Lodge (Jagdschloss Granitz) was built on the highest hill in East Rügen in 1838-46. It was commissioned by Prince Wilhelm Malte I of Putbus and designed by architect Johann G. Steinmeyer in imitation of North Italian Renaissance castles. The hunting lodge was a popular holiday destination for European nobility and is today one of the most visited castles in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The building stands out because of its four corner towers and a 38m-high central tower that is accessed through a 154-steps circular staircase. Decoration consists in aristocratic furnishing, hunting "trophies" (stag antlers from all over the world) and old hunting rifles.

Access & Transport

It is not possible to drive to the castle so visitors should either hike from Binz or the Jagdschloss car park, or take a small tourist called the Jagdschlossexpress. Jagdschlossexpress: https://ruegen-bahnen.de/jagdschloss-express/ Access & Parking: https://www.mv-schloesser.de/de/besucherservice-granitz/ The lodge is 16km from the main town on the island, Bergen auf Rügen and 3km south of the resort town of Binz. It is also connected to the latter by the Rügen Light Railway. From Stralsund, on the mainland, it is a 45km drive.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with Binzer Beach, only 3km away.

Meta review

The castle one of the best-known attractions in the region, but online reviews are quite mixed. The main issues over the last 2-3 years were the non-adherence to many Covid-related measures and the fact that the tower was closed to visitors without it being mentioned at the parking area although it is clearly one of the highlights (the entrance fee was reduced accordingly, but that did not seem to pacify those reviewers). The inability to park close to the castle is also an issue for many although they acknowledge the walk is easily manageable. On the positive side, they highlight the photogenic exterior and describe the interior as nice but not special.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral (minor use of electricity to run the building). Preserves the island's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

The Granitz Hunting Lodge is, in our opinion, an interesting addition for any visitor to Rugen Island who doesn't mind a walk or has the budget to take the small tourist train. It makes for a nice outing but don't expect to be dazzled.

Key positive

The circular staircase

Striking exterior design

Key negative

Impractical access

The collection of antlers won't be to everyone's taste

Suitability

Not accessible for visitors with reduced mobility (there are stairs and it is unclear if they would allow car to come all the way to the lodge)
