Ludwigslust Palace

Schloßfreiheit, Ludwigslust, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Description

Ludwigslust Palace was initially built as a hunting lodge for the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin based in Schwerin, within a day's ride. It was named after his son, Prince Christian Ludwig and turned into a palace in the 1770's. It is designed in Baroque style on an E-plan foundations and mixes Ionic (wings) and Corinthian orders (central block). The interiors are neo-classical and the palace is surrounded by a 120ha park with canals, fountains and even an artificial cascade.

Access & Transport

The castle is a short walk from the center of town and 1.4km south of the train station. The town is 45km south of Schwerin with trains (RB) taking 33mins to get there. From Hamburg, it is 120km and a 1h ride on the ICE trains

Meta review

The palace is not as well-known as Schwerin, only 40mins away, but it gets excellent feedback from visitors who enjoy the relative lack of tourists, expansive park and affordable entrance price. That being said, the majority of comments highlight that the building isn't large compared to better known palaces in the country, France of Austria and that the interiors could do with a "refresh". A tip, for those travelling by train between a combination of Berlin, Hamburg and other destinations in Northern Germany is to get off the train for a couple of hours and jump into another one, if your ticket allows. The ground floor coffee shop also gets the thumbs up in many reviews.

Environmental & Social

Not data available regarding environment and social practices and policies. The gardens are a positive but not the energy consumption required to operate the palace. This activity helps preserve the region's architectural heritage and also brings in some economic activity through tourism

Conclusion

Ludwigslust Palace is an excellent addition to any north-western Germany itinerary or for a half-day outing from Hamburg. Visitors will enjoy the vast park, low-key town and gorgeous facade.
