Ozeaneum, Stralsund - by Management
Description
Ozeaneum is an aquarium located in the German Baltic Sea town of Stralsund. It comprises several sections such as the massive cylindrical "Open Atlantic" tank which is 9m deep, 17m in diameter and includes a shipwreck at its bottom with various fish species such as corkwings, gilthead seabreams and sea basses. There is also a North Sea and a Baltic Sea section, Humboldt Penguins and scheduled feedings.
Access & Transport
The aquarium is only 250m from the main square of town, along the harbour. Stralsund is located 30km from Bergen auf Rügen, 80km east of Rostock, 270km west of Hamburg and 260km north of Berlin. It is also only 180km to the Polish town of Szczecin. By train, it is 50-60mins from Rostock (Regional and ICE), 2h50 from Hamburg, about 3h from Berlin and only 25-30mins to Bergen auf Rügen.
Instructions & Recommendations
We strongly recommend combining this attraction with a discovery of Stralsund town centre.
Environmental & Social
There is a foundation and several research projects, but little seems to be done by way of conservation efforts and the treatment of the penguins is at odds with some of their stated policies.
Conclusion
The Ozeaneum in Stralsund is a nice family activity which is let down by its pricing and inconsistency between message and action with regards to animal welfare. It isn't world-class but for a town the size of Stralsund it has some pretty impressive and enjoyable tanks. Definitely an option to consider in your itinerary.
