Pomeranian State Museum

9 Rakower Straße, Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Description

The Pomeranian State Museum (Pommersches Landesmuseum) houses an archaeological collection and historical exhibits focused on the Pomeranian region and paintings from regional artists such as Caspar David Friedrich. It was developed on the site of the Franziskaner Abbey in the town of Greifswald in the North-Eastern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Access & Transport

Address: Rakower Str. 9, 17489 Greifswald The museum is in the center of Greifswald, a 10mins walk from the train station. Bus stop Knopfstraße (2, 3) is 200m north but unless you are a resident it is unlikely to be of use for tourism purposes. The town is 35km south-east of Stralsund, 105km from Rostock and 230km from Berlin. Szczecin, in Poland, is 150km to the south-east. By train, it is a 25mins journey to Stralsund, 2h30-3h00 to Berlin and 3h30 to Hamburg.

Meta review

Although it is little known outside of the region, the museum gets excellent reviews from visitors who enjoy the variety and depth of exhibits, including some interactive ones, as well as the building and layout. The main criticism is the lack of English translation (German only) and, for a few, the lack of "masterpieces", which is to be expected for a regional museum.

Environmental & Social

Minor environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity) but some investment has been made with the use of LED technology for lighting. Positive from a social perspective as it helps preserve the region's cultural and historical heritage and educate visitors

Conclusion

The Pomeranian State Museum is an excellent museum with a broad collection and appeal; even though it is focused on the geographic region of Pomerania. In our opinion, this is one of the best cultural activities in the region, outside of the Hanseatic towns' architecture and churches.
