Schwerin Castle

1 Lennéstraße, Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Description

Schwerin Castle was built in the 10th century on an island in the lake of Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state in Germany. The Dukes of Mecklenburg moved there in the 14th century and the castle was transformed into a palace in the 16th century before seeing its defensive features expanded in the 17th century. However, what you will see today mostly date from the mid-19th century when the complex was reconstructed. The palace currently houses the state parliament. The castle was inspired by French Renaissance edifices and is widely regarded as one of the most important buildings in the romantic Historicism movement in Europe (along Neuschwanstein in Bavaria). The castle is also known for its gardens that mix Italian architecture with English landscape.

Access & Transport

The castle island is accessible by 2 short bridges and is only a 5mins walk from the old centre of town. It is 1.4km / 15mins walk from the train station and a 2h30mins ride to Berlin or 1h30 to Hamburg. By car, it is 110km to Hamburg, 80km to Lübeck, 90km to Rostock and 205km to Berlin.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to spend some time visiting the park and gardens and the rest of Schwerin town (refer to separate review)

Meta review

The castle is one of the best-known attractions in Northern Germany and it ranks well on online portals. Travellers mostly enjoy the architecture and surrounding gardens but there are recurring comments that the number of rooms open to visitors is disappointingly low and whilst some of the rooms are interesting and certainly well maintained, the inside is quite underwhelming compared to the outside of the building.

Environmental & Social

Not data available regarding environment and social practices and policies. The gardens are a positive but not the energy consumption required to operate the castle. This activity helps preserve the region's architectural heritage and also brings in some economic activity through tourism

Conclusion

Schwerin Castle is a definite must see for anybody visiting the Mecklenburg region or as a day trip from Hamburg, to be complemented by a visit of the rest of town. The interior is nowhere as impressive as the exterior architecture or even the surrounding gardens so whether it is worth going in depends on personal interests.
