Schwerin, St Marien Cathedral - by Matthias Hartung on Google
Description
Schwerin is the capital of the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (although Rostock is twice more populated). Its first recorded exisence was in the 11th century and it acted as the capital of the (Grand) Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin the late 14th century until 1918. Highlights include the Schwerin Castle (refer to separate review), Schwerin Cathedral, the Old Garden Square (Alter Garten), Saint Nicolai Church, the State Art Museum, and the City Hall.
Access & Transport
From Schwerin, it is a 2h30mins by train to Berlin or 1h30 to Hamburg. By car, it is 110km to Hamburg, 80km to Lübeck, 90km to Rostock and 205km to Berlin.
Instructions & Recommendations
Make sure to include a visit to Schwerin Castle during your stay. Other nearby attractions include the town of Wismar and Ludwigslust Palace, each a 40mins drive away but in opposite directions.
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint and the setting is quite green. Tourism helps preserve some of the city's architectural and cultural heritages
Conclusion
The town of Schwerin is compact enough to take in the main sights in half a day and the main draw is the castle, by a margin. If that is not of interest to you then we would not recommend to make a detour but, if it is, there are a few attractions worth exploring as part as a regional road trip.
