Warnemünde Strand, Rostock

Strandweg, Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Description

Warnemünde is a seaside resort within the city limits of Rostock, along the Baltic Sea and at the mouth of the river Warnow. It is also one of the world's busiest cruise ports. It is well known for its long sandy beach, stretching 3-10km (depending on criteria used). The spot is popular for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Sights include the lighthouse built in 1897 and the nearby Teepott building with its curved roof.

Access & Transport

The Strand is connected by Suburban train (S1, S2, S3) at Warnemünde station, near the mouth of the river. There are also ICE services to Berlin stopping there (2h20 journey). Rostock has express train services (ICE) to Berlin (2h) and Hamburg (also 2h). There are also regional services to Schwerin, the state capital, in 1h. By car, Warnemünde is 12km north of Rostock city centre, 100km northeast of Schwerin, 190km from Hamburg (A20 exit Rostock-West) and 240km northwest of Berlin (A24/A19).

Instructions & Recommendations

Besides the city, other attractions in the area include the church of Bad Doberan (Doberaner Münster) and the amusement park of Karl's Adventure Village Rövershagen, both about 20km away but in opposite directions.

Meta review

The beach is one of the most popular in the country and visitors enjoy the developed infrastructure with hotels, restaurants and entertainment along a nice white sand beach. Of course, the water is chilly, but the reliable wind makes its great for nautical sports. Even travellers coming off from cruises at the harbour and not expecting much are often very happy with a casual half day by the sea, having a relaxed coffee and their feet in the sand.

Environmental & Social

No carbon footprint linked to this activity. Some economic benefits to the local community but commercialization also has its drawbacks

Conclusion

Foreigners may not associate the Baltic Sea with beaches but on a warm and sunny day, Warnemünde is an enjoyable seaside resort, baring the swimming. It makes for an enjoyable break from visiting Hanseatic towns & cities
