Western Pomerania Lagoon Area hike

4 Bernsteinweg, Prerow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Description

The Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park is situated along the Baltic Sea, in North-Western Germany. It covers the Darß peninsula (where the hike we are reviewing is located), the island of Hiddensee and parts of the coastline of Rügen island and surroundings smaller islands. Some of the lagoons have brackish water (i.e. more salinity than freshwater), which contributes to the wildlife diversity of the area. The Darß peninsula offers a mix of sandy, dirt and boardwalk trails to hikers, including a 12.2km loop leaving from Prerow all the way to the Darßer Lighthouse. The natural setting varies with a mix of pine forest, moors, dunes and marshlands. The trail is essentially flat, making it suitable to inexperienced hikers, as long as they have a minimum base fitness to walk up to 3h at an easy pace.

Access & Transport

Prerow is 50km northwest of Stralsund through Barth and 60km northeast of Rostock through Dierhagen and Wustrow. We suggest parking near the beach, shortly after the Darß-Museum in Prerow.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to carry enough water and protect your feet from the potential sand abrasion with adequate socks and footwear.

Meta review

The hike is ranked as one of the most popular in the area and also one of the most straightforward. Reviewers mention having spotted various animals such as seals, foxes, deer and various types of birds, of course. They also comment that it is never crowded and a good option for trail running.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. Socially marginally positive as it brings some revenues to the villages in the area

Conclusion

The National Park offers plenty of hiking opportunities and the Prerow-Lighthouse loop combines ease of access, well-marked trails and a variation in ecosystems. It is a great option for those looking to discover the coastline and its wildlife and don't mind some physical activity.
