Description
Ciutadella (or Ciudadela) is the largest town in the western part of Menorca and was the island's capital before it was moved to Mahón during the British occupation of the early 18th century. There are some archaeological Talayotic settlements in the area, but the town was founded by the Carthaginians and was for centuries occupied by the Moors until the island was conquered by King Alfonso III of Aragon in 1287. Highlights include the old port area, the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Menorca, the Obelisk and the historical centre.
Access & Transport
The town is on the western coastline of Menorca, 45km from Menorca Airport which is located next to Mahon and has flights to Ibiza, Mallorca and several Spanish and European cities. There are ferries to Alcudia, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Valancia.

Conclusion
Ciutadella is arguably one of Menorca's highlights, ranking top alongside the Talaiòtic settlements and some of the coves. It should please those with cultural inclinations but also travellers who enjoy roaming provincial towns, absorbing the atmosphere and trying out the local cuisine in small restaurants. A good place to be based for a few days and explore the rest of the island.
