Mahón - by shuki yedidovich on Google
Description
Mahón is the seat of Menorca's government; it lies along a natural harbour on the island's eastern coastline. Founded by the Carthaginian general Mago it was then annexed by the Romans and after several centuries of invasion (following the fall of the Roman Empire) it became part of the Caliphate of Cordoba in 903 until the island was conquered by King Alfonso III of Aragon in 1287. It also became a British dependence for 70 years following the early 18th century War of the Spanish Succession. Highlights include Santa Maria de Maó, the local market (Mercat des Peix), the port area and, generally, the narrow streets and old buildings of the town centre.
Access & Transport
Menorca airport is just 4km east of the city with flights to Mallorca, Ibiza and several Spanish and European cities. The port of Mahon has several ferry connections with Palma de Mallorca, Alcudia, Valencia and Barcelona.
Instructions & Recommendations
It is a short drive from town to the Mola Fortress and the Talayotic archaeologic site of Talatí de Dalt (in opposite directions)
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Socially neutral

Mahon is worth exploring for a few hours when in eastern Menorca but, in our opinion, it does not warrant a special trip from afar
