Mola Fortress, Menorca

Carretera de la Mola, Islas Baleares, Islas Baleares

Description

The Mola Fortress (Fortaleza de Isabel II) was built in the mid-19th century to defend the entrance of the natural harbour of the town of Mahon, possibly against British and French forces in the Mediterrannean. It was also used as the main Spanish Army base on Menorca. The polygonal fortifications include a deep moat and long-range canons. A network of cisterns and channels was built to harvest and store rainwater to ensure water supply during a siege.

Access & Transport

The fortress is 7 km east of Mahon, on the eastern seaboard of Menorca, as the crow flies. By car, from the center of Mahon, it is 10km on the Me3 (Carretera la mola). Accessibility: there is a route adapted for people in wheelchairs, avoiding steps and areas which could cause them difficulty

Meta review

Who would have thought there would be fake reviews even for such a site... Anyways, the most consistent comment is that the complex is huge, so you'll need about 2h to cover it, especially to reach the highlight for many: the Vickers battery. The majority of visitors seem positively surprised by the number of things to see but the sense is that there is a lack of information (unless you are taking the audio guide).

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the region's architectural and historical heritages

Conclusion

The fortress is one of the main tourist attractions in eastern Menorca and those keen on military defensive structures should be suitably served. Do not go for historical aspects though as the complex has not experienced any live action during its c. 150years.

Key positive

Plenty of interesting military defensive aspects

Visually impressive with good views

Key negative

Lacks history and information boards

Suitability

Most sections, but not all, are accessible to visitors with reduced mobility
