Frost Museum of Science

1101 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida

Description

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science combines an aquarium, a planetarium with a 20m wide dome, and science exhibits. The Aquarium mostly features habitats from South Florida and the Gulf; the centrepiece is the Gulf Stream tank that is home to hammerhead sharks and devil rays. The Science section focuses on stars, the sun and solar system, the periodic table, the history of flight (animals and aircrafts), and the Everglades ecosystem.

Access & Transport

The museum is at 1101 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, at the edge of the Maurice A. Ferré Park. The light rail Omni Loop stops there at Museum Park station and there is a bus stop on Biscayne Blvd. Onsite parking is available for a $18 flat rate Accessibility info: https://www.frostscience.org/accessibility/

Instructions & Recommendations

If you don't mind more cultural activities, the Pérez Art Museum Miami is next door. Alternatively, for shopping and restaurants, the Bayside Marketplace is a 15mins walk to the south (past the Kaseya Center)

Meta review

Always listed by travel blogs and guidebooks, the online reviews are also good but not exceptional. The aquarium is the star of the show, followed by the planetarium whereas the science exhibits are described as very hands on and therefore engaging for children but spreading too thin over too many topics. Some negative comments on the high admission fees.

Environmental & Social

The building is LEED Gold certified with a focus on HVAC, lighting and water usage efficiency + sustainability of building materials. Details here: https://www.frostscience.org/about-the-building/sustainability/ + Educational aspects

Conclusion

The Frost Museum of Science is an excellent option for families with curious-minded children; it touches on many topics and is very engaging - even immersive as relates to the planetarium and large fish tank. It is quite a budget though. For adults, not a priority, in our opinion.
