Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio, Milan - by Filippo Nieddu on Google
Description
The Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio was built at the end of the 4th century, making it one of the oldest churches in Milan. Its initial name was actually 'Basilica Martyrum' because it was constructed in an area where numerous martyrs of the Roman persecutions had been buried. Its current appearance and Romanesque design date from the 12th century. Notable architectural features include the two bell towers with a clearly defensive look and an octagonal tower over the east end of the nave. Inside, the apse displays a 13th century mosaic depicting 'Christ Pantokrator with Sts Gervasus and Protasus' and the ceiling of the Oratory has a gilded dome with the portrait of the patron saint.
Access & Transport
The church is on Piazza Sant'Ambrogio, 800m south of Cadorna train station and 1.4km southwest of Il Duomo. The S. Ambrogio metro station (2) is less than 2mins' walk away and bus 94 stops on Via Giosue Carducci.
Instructions & Recommendations
This is a place of worship so visitors should behave appropriately and dress conservatively.
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity environmental neutral. Helps preserve the city's architectural and artistic heritages
Conclusion
The Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio deserves a visit for its well-preserved Romanesque architecture and some of its decorative features (we like the mosaic). A perfect stop on the way between Sempione Park / Castello Sforzesco and the Naviglio district.
