Da Vinci's Last Supper (guided tour)

2 Piazza di Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milano, Lombardia

Description

The Last Supper (Il Cenacolo) is a mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci located in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. It represents the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with the Twelve Apostles, as it is told in the Gospel of John. Time allotment in front of the mural is 15mins per group of 35 people.

Access & Transport

For those booking a tour, meet your guide in Piazza di Santa Maria delle Grazie in front of the church. Tram #2 stops at 'S. Maria delle Grazie', opposite the church. Cadonra (trains, M1, M2) and Conciliazione metro station (1) are just 5mins walk away Bus 50 and 169 stop on Via Boccaccio.

Instructions & Recommendations

Tickets are released by batches several months in advance on the website but run out very quickly, mostly bought by tours and guides who then resell them at a price significantly marked up from the official €15. If booked on the official website, the tours in English language take place at 9h30, 11h30, 15h00, and 17h00 The names of the participants in the visit must be inserted before the payment of the ticket and visitors must bring their passport / ID.

Meta review

Most online reviewers seem to have enjoyed their tour, qualifying their guide of knowledgeable and, although time in from of the mural was quite short, most people did not feel it was rushed. The only real issue is managing to find your group at the meeting point.

Environmental & Social

Very low carbon footprint and helps preserve the city's architectural and cultural heritages. We dislike the commercialization though.

Conclusion

Da Vinci's Last Supper is indeed a special work of art but the price gouging that takes place can't be justified in our opinion. You can get dozens of masterpieces in a top-tier museum for the same price. That being said, if you can grab tickets ahead of time through the website directly at official prices then it is still expensive but not unreasonable.
