Description
The Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral) is the largest church in Italy (excl. the Vatican) and one of the largest in the world (158m x 92m and 108m in height). Construction started in the mid-14th century and was only completed in 1965, thus mixing several artistic styles with Gothic and Renaissance the dominating ones. The roof of the cathedral is renowned for the forest of openwork pinnacles and spires set upon delicate flying buttresses. It can only be visited with guided tours and the operator chosen by the diocese/management is Veneranda Fabbrica. The tour reviewed here takes place twice a day in English and lasts 90mins. It includes fast-track entry, access to the roof terraces and to the museum.
Access & Transport
The tour starts outside the ticket office at Piazza del Duomo 14/A. The Duomo metro station (1, 3) and tram station (2, 12, 14, 16, 19) stop on Piazza del Duomo.
Instructions & Recommendations
*** The timing of the tours can sometimes change so best to check the website for your desired date *** We suggest combining this attraction with a visit to the Royal Palace and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
Environmental & Social
The ongoing environmental footprint is low, and the ticket fees help maintain the monument which is part of the city's cultural and architectural heritages + provide jobs for cultural guides
Conclusion
Il Dumo di Milano is iconic and the best way to get the full experience is without doubt a guided tour that includes a visit to the roof. Highly recommended if your budget allows and for architecture buffs.
