Description
Piazza del Duomo is Milan's main square, it is dominated by the Cathedral (Il Duomo) and the Royal Palace since medieval times. Its current shape was largely designed in the 2nd half of the 19th century (after the Second Italian War of Independence of 1859) by architect Giuseppe Mengoni who included the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade. Other notable buildings include several palaces (dell'Arengario, Carminati, dei Portici Settentrionali, dei Portici Meridionali) and the monument to King Victor Emmanuel II.
