Science & Technology Museum Da Vinci

21 Via San Vittore, Milano, Lombardia

Description

The Science & Technology Museum of Milan is dedicated to painter and scientist Leonardo Da Vinci. It is housed in the ancient monastery of San Vittore al Corpo and divided into various exhibitions: Particle physics, Telecommunications, Transport (air, naval, rail), Earth fragility and beauty, Space, Leonardo da Vinci, Foundry, Energy and materials, Metal (Aluminium, Iron & Steel), Plastic & Rubber, Basic Chemical manufacturing, Photovoltaics. Highlights include a Toti-class submarine, a Foucault pendulum, some of Leonardo's machines, several aircraft and a 1:1 scale model of the first Vega launcher.

Access & Transport

The museum is on Via San Vittore, along the southwestern edge of the city centre. The closest metro station is S. Ambrogio (2), 200m away and bus 58 stops on Via S. Vittore Via De Togni. The closest parking is Carducci Parking in via Olona

Instructions & Recommendations

A separate fee applies for a guided tour of the Enrico Toti Submarine. We suggest combining this activity with the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio, only 300m away.

Meta review

The museum is widely recommended by travel guides as one of the best educational activities, for families in particular, and online reviews do support that statement. As some visitors clarify, this is not to say that it is for children only (the Space section is best for them as it has more interactive exhibits) and adults will have plenty of opportunities to learn something. Admittedly, there are some 'dull' sections but others are very engaging with special mention for the means of transport (ships, planes, trains). English translations are ubiquitous.

Environmental & Social

No environnemental data information. Repurposing of an old building and some electricity consumption (lighting/ heating/cooling). Educational content and activities with schools

Conclusion

The Science & Technology Museum is an excellent educational option - it is very visual and works well with kids of pretty much all ages whilst still being relevant for adults. Pricing is also very reasonable considering the size and content which means this activity has very good value.
