Teatro alla Scala (guided tour)

2 Via Filodrammatici, Milano, Lombardia

Description

Teatro alla Scala is regarded as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres globally. It was designed by architect Giuseppe Piermarini in neo-classical style after Milan's previous theatre (Teatro Regio Ducale) was destroyed by a fire in 1776. The building is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet, La Scala Theatre Orchestra, and the Filarmonica della Scala orchestra. There are guided tours daily that take visitors to see the historic boxes, royal box, foyer, stalls and the stage’s mechanized movement system. The price also covers entry to the Museum.

Access & Transport

The visit starts from Ridotto dei palchi “Arturo Toscanini” The Opera is on the namesake square: Piazza della Scala, just to the north of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Tram #1 stops there, and both the Cordusio metro (1) and Duomo metro (1, 3) stations are 500m away with other tram lines available.

Instructions & Recommendations

The minimum age for tours is 12yrs old. English tour leaves at 09h30 and 16h00 and lasts 60mins. Italian tours start at 13h00. For the 16h00 tour, you should visit the museum first as it closes at 17h30. Note that Theatre tours may be subject to variations or cancellations, even at the last minute. Tickets will be reimbursed in the event of cancellations

Meta review

The guided visit is described as 'interesting' by most online reviewers who mention the various technical details being learnt, the beautiful theatre and the chance to possibly witness some rehearsal or change of stage décor. The museum itself is a nice add-on but definitely not the main draw.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data available. We deem this activity environmentally neutral and marginally positive from a social perspective as it helps preserve the city's architectural and cultural heritages.

Conclusion

La Scala is one of the most famous venues for Opera so we would highly recommend music enthusiasts to consider the guided tours - that is if you have not already booked a ticket for a performance or concert there. For those less into music, this shouldn't be a priority when visiting the city for the first time.
