Rothenburg ob der Tauber

2 Marktplatz, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bayern

Description

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a small medieval town in the Franconia region of Bavaria. It is part of the Romantic Road that links several picturesque towns through southern Germany. Some of the buildings were constructed as far back as the 10-11th century (such as the castle) and Rothenburg was a Free imperial city from the late Middle Ages until 1803, meaning it was self-ruling with a certain degree of autonomy and was represented in the Imperial Diet. The main sights include the city walls (the only other German towns with completely intact city walls are Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl), the timber-framed Plönlein, the Marquet Square and City Hall, the Double bridge over the Tauber, and St James' Church.

Access & Transport

The town is 60km south of Würzburg on the A7 and 80km west of Nuremberg (B8/B470). The major international airports are Munich (210km) and Frankfurt (180km). There are no direct train connections from those cities but it is possible to get there with one or two changes.

Instructions & Recommendations

The town also includes a few interesting museums. It is a 60km drive to the Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg

Meta review

The town is very popular among tourists and it can get a little crowded during the day, so a recurring advice is to spend one night there to enjoy a peaceful evening and morning time. Visitors enjoy the authentic old town, picturesque buildings, many gift shops as well as the countryside scenery. There are several reviewers stating this is one of the most beautiful villages / towns they have seen.

Environmental & Social

The main activities in the town have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy even though there are signs of over-commercialisation

Conclusion

With such an architectural and historical heritage, it is difficult not to recommend a visit to Rothenburg od der Tauber for anybody going through the Nuremberg area or on a Bavarian road trip itinerary.
