Montreal Botanical Garden

4101 Rue Sherbrooke Est, Montréal, Québec

Description

The Montreal Botanical Garden contains 10 greenhouses and 20 thematic gardens, it covers 75ha and was founded in 1931, hence the Art Deco-style administration building. Greenhouses include, inter alia, Arid Regions, Orchids and Aroids, Begonias and Gesneriads, and Tropical Food Plants. Among the gardens are the Japanese that include a dry garden and a tea garden, the Alpine, the Chinese, the First Nations, and the Rose Garden.

Access & Transport

The botanical garden is located in the Olympic Park, about 250m southwest of the Montreal Tower. The Pie-IX metro station (green line) is a 3 mins walk away and some bus services stop there on Sherbrook St (the one road crossing the park) and Pie-IX Blvd. There is paid parking at 4101 rue Sherbrooke Est (outdoor) and at the Olympic Park Sports Centre (P5, underground) located at 3200 rue Viau.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this attraction with a visit of the park and another activity there such as the Biodome or the Insectarium.

Meta review

Generally listed by travel guidebooks, it is difficult to properly assess the attraction based on online reviews given the outstanding proportion of fake entries (both positive and negative) - certainly, just looking at the map, it doesn't deserve 4h or more. Anyways, what is clear is that the Chinese and Japanese gardens are the favourites and that the gardens are definitely less interesting in the winter, probably being at their best from spring to mid-summer but the greenhouses are interesting year-round. Recurring comments that a large amount of space seems to be under-utilized, probably meaning that several of the gardens aren't very impressive or the theming/landscaping is not as obvious to the untrained eye.

Environmental & Social

A green activity. Some conservation aspects and home to a research team (https://espacepourlavie.ca/en/science-jardin-botanique)

Conclusion

The Montreal Botanical Garden is a good option for those looking to take a break from the city centre for a few hours or with an interest in botany. It also makes for a good combo with the Insectarium or the Biodome but we also think it is somewhat overpriced. Best in springtime and summer.
