Mozart Concert at the Golden Hall

1 Musikvereinsplatz, Wien, Wien

Description

The Musikverein in Vienna is one of the best-known concert halls in the world; it is celebrated for the quality of its orchestra and the acoustics of its largest hall: the Golden Hall (or Grand Hall). The latter has a large pipe organ, a seating capacity of about 1,700 and a standing one of 300. Concerts with a focus on the works of W.A. Mozart are held several times a week and include a mix of movements from symphonies and serenades, concertos for piano, violin and flute and overtures, arias and duets from his best-known operas.

Access & Transport

The concert hall is on Karlsplatz, on the southern edge of Innere Stadt. The Karsplatz metro (U1, U4) and tram stations (1, 62) are next to it as well as bus 4A and the Schwarzenbergplatz tram station (71, D) is 100m away.

Instructions & Recommendations

Admissions start at 19h30 and the concert at 20h15, finishing around 22h00.

Meta review

The concert gets excellent online reviews from spectators who enjoy both the building and the quality of the performance even though some note that you'd better be a fan of Mozart, or at least not mind his style. Other issues picked on by reviewers are the cramped seating, and the overly touristic touch of the orchestra wearing wigs. Tip: the dress code is not formally observed so smart casual will do.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data but performances require significant electricity consumption (lighting, cooling, heating). Helps spread the arts

Conclusion

Recommended for those with little or no experience of philharmonic and opera performances and wishing to give it a try with a Viennese touch. For enlightened amateurs, there are better options around or on different days.

Key positive

Good quality performance

High quality hall acoustics

Key negative

Feels a little artificial and touristy

Suitability

Min age is 5years old but we would only recommend this activity for 16 years and above in terms of interest. Accessible to wheelchair users.
