27 Barer Straße, München, Bayern

Description

The Alte Pinakothek houses Old Master paintings covering the period between the 14th and 18th centuries ("Alte" refers to "Old"). Over 700 paintings belonging to the Bavarian State Painting Collections are exposed at any one time and include masterpieces by famous German, Dutch, Flemish, Italian, French and Spanish (e.g. Poussin, El Greco, Velazquez, Da Vinci, Titian, Rubens, Bosch, Dürer). The building was constructed in the 1860's in Neo-Renaissance style and was at the time the largest museum in the world. It was damaged by bombings during WW2 and reconstructed in the 1950's.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you fancy it, you can easily combine this activity with another museum visit in the museum quarter as they tend not to overlap in terms of content. Alternatively, the southern end of the English Garden is 1.5km / 20mins walk away.

Meta review

As one of the main cultural venues in the city, the museum is systematically featured in online blogs and travel guidebooks. Visitors enjoy the vast collection of paintings - including some deemed masterpieces; even though some comment that it can be a little tiring after a while, and one loses focus. The main recurring negative comments are that it is hard to buy online tickets for non-German speaker, that the guards can be unfriendly and that the rules regarding min. distance to be kept from the paintings are overly strict, which makes it hard to read labels.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Spreads culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Alte Pinakothek extensive collection of 14th-18th century paintings from continental European artists is one of the city's main cultural assets. There is plenty of high-quality works but most tourists will probably tire of it after 2.5/3h, which works well for residents who can make repeat visits there and need not try to cover everything in one go.
