Description
Asam Church (Asamkirche) is an atypical Baroque church located on the southwestern side of the Old City neighbourhood of Munich. It was built as a private church by the two Asam brothers, a sculptor and a painter, in the mid 18th century. They had bought four houses for their project, so the building is only 22x8m and its stucco facade is integrated with the buildings on either side of it. The church, now accessible to the public, is known for its heavily decorated interior and the quality of its frescoes such as "Life of Saint Nepomuk" on the ceiling. The actual name of the church is St. Johann Nepomuk (the saint of Bohemia).
Access & Transport
The church is located at 32 Sendlinger Str. The closest U-Bahn and tram station is Sendlinger Tor (U1, U2, U3, U6, U7, U8 and trams 16, 17, 18, 27, 28) only 300m away.
Instructions & Recommendations
This activity is best combined with a visit of the Marienplatz area, Viktualienmarkt, Karlsplatz-Stachus or the Glockenbach & Gärtnerplatz neighbourhood
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Part of the city's architectural and artistic heritage.
Conclusion
The Asam Church is unusual and that alone almost warrants a visit, but it has plenty of quality art to back it up. The content is religious, but one doesn't need to be a dedicated fan to enjoy what the Asam brothers have accomplished. Highly recommended for anyone.
