BMW Museum, Munich

2 Am Olympiapark, München, Bayern

Description

The BMW Museum is an automobile museum showing the company's technical development throughout its history; it is located next to its Munich headquarters. The building is in the shape of a salad bowl (its nickname) with a base 20m in diameter and a flat roof about twice that. Visitors can see not only cars and motorcycles but also aircrafts and engines with a mix between vintage and modern models.

Access & Transport

Address: Am Olympiapark 2, 80809 München The Olympiazentrum U-Bahn station (U3, U8) is 200m north of the museum and is the most convenient way to get there. By car, it is just north of the 2R / Georg Brauchle ring road, exit on Lerchenauer Str. Directions info: https://www.bmw-welt.com/en.html#infos

Instructions & Recommendations

Do note that children under 14 need to be accompanied by an adult. We suggest combining a visit there with the BMW Welt across the road where you can test drive and buy BMW models - quite the souvenir! Olympiapark is also diagonally across the roads from the museum.

Meta review

The museum is one of the most visited attractions in the city and car lovers are extremely positive about their visits, being able to see so many classic models and some "futuristic" prototypes as well. Even those who are more indifferent to cars and motorbikes have positive comments about the modern building and well-maintained venue, but they are also often a little disappointed with the shallow historical background - something a couple of museums in Stuttgart do a little better apparently.

Environmental & Social

Plenty of marketing around EVs but no data available on the museum itself which does require a fair amount of electricity to run. Socially neutral

Conclusion

The BMW Museum is an enjoyable activity with a polished venue and plenty of interesting vehicles but given its lack of emphasis on either technological or historical background, it really feels like a showroom in disguise and is much more suited for lovers of all things mechanical and engine-powered.

Key positive

Wide range of models across cars, motorbikes, airplanes + some engines and turbines

Striking building design

Key negative

Feels a little commercial and lacks educational content

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but more interesting for adults. Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
