Deutsches Museum

1 Museumsinsel, München, Bayern

Description

The Deutsches Museum is the world's largest museum of science and technology - its full name is the German Museum of Masterpieces of Science and Technology. It was founded at the beginning of the 20th century and the island on the Isar river on which it stands in Munich was renamed Museum Island after it (instead of "coal island"). There are over 28,000 objects exhibited in various fields ranging from aerospace, chemistry, energy and technology to metallurgy and agriculture (and everything in between). Children are not forgotten with plenty of activities at the Kinderreich.

Access & Transport

Address: Museumsinsel 1, Munich The closest tram station Deutches Museum is 150m away on Ludwigsbrücke (#17 but currently closed). Isartor is 300m away (S1 to S8 S-Bahn services and trams 16, 27). Bus 132 just across Boschbrücke and Fraunhoferstraße station (U1, U2, U7, U8 and trams 18, 28) are also good options. There are no parking facilities

Instructions & Recommendations

Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. This activity is best combined with a visit of the Haidhausen or Glockenbach & Gärtnerplatz neighbourhoods

Meta review

This museum is highly thought of by guidebook writers and the majority of online reviewers agree with that position, pointing out the vast array of exhibits and topics, many of which are hands-on and cater to various age levels. However, there is a very consistent stream of comments from visitors who state that nothing has changed in over 15 years, making not only the content but also the media either outdated or just not functional anymore. In addition, the layout can be confusing, and the info is mostly available in German.

Environmental & Social

Small environmental footprint on a per visitor basis. Helps spread culture and interest in sciences.

Conclusion

The museum is a wonderful venue but, in its bid to cover all possible ranges of scientific and technological fields, it exposed itself to a struggle to keep up with the time. It remains a worthy visit with plenty to keep visitors of every age interested but, for many, it won't really be a highlight.

Appropriate for all age levels

Key negative

Suffer from lack of modernization / under-investment

Suitability

Suitable for all ages - great for families in fact. Most of the museum is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility (~80%) but not all.
